Get to the Heart of GERD and Other Causes of Heartburn

There is a condition responsible for causing heartburn and it’s known as GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.  To date, it is one of the leading and proven causes of heartburn.

You don’t have to go through so much stress and indigestion to figure out heartburn.  Fortunately, GERD explains most of the causes of heartburn in men, causes of heartburn in women, and causes of heartburn in children.

GERD is more of a reflex action of the gut.  When the lower sphincter of your esophagus doesn’t close properly, the contents of the stomach leak back through the esophagus to the mouth.

To get to the heart of heartburn, you need to understand what triggers GERD.  It could be any of the following:

Peptic ulcer.  A history of peptic ulcer contributes to GERD as one of the common causes of heartburn.  Peptic ulcers are lesions in the stomach or duodenum of the small intestine.  They cause stomach upsets which aggravate GERD unless you seek relief through antacids.

Gastritis.  A case of gastritis should also be looked into.  Gastritis means that the lining of the stomach is inflamed.  Although gastritis isn’t one of the causes of heartburn, they produce similar symptoms and are relieved by similar treatments.  These medications are designed to reduce stomach acids, too.

Gastroparesis.  Gastroparesis simply means a delay in the emptying of the stomach.  In fact, the stomach takes an unusually long time to empty its contents.  More pressure gets exerted on your lower esophageal sphincter causing a reflux.

There are serious illnesses like heart disease which show symptoms similar to heartburn.  One of the possible causes of heartburn which you should be vigilant about is chest pain.  The pain which occurs in heart problems like angina is intense and crushing, while that which happens in heartburn is milder but just as fearful to handle.

When you have a problem with being overweight, obesity becomes your setback for heartburn.  You’d be more prone to the causes of heartburn and indigestion.  To overcome this problem, develop a healthier attitude towards diet and activity.  It starts with eating right and exercising regularly.  Once you achieve your ideal weight, maintain it for good health.

When you’ve got a history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, these also predispose you to attacks of chest pain and stress.  The solution to this would be to eliminate the causes of heartburn and stress in your life.  Give up activities which expose you to substance abuse like drugs and alcohol.  Instead, develop a healthier lifestyle.  Avoid situations which spark your anger and fire up your temper.  Take charge of your emotions and develop a positive mindset.

The healthier you are, the better you’ll sleep because you’ll get rid of the causes of heartburn at night.  Unless you’re a hundred-percent sure of the causes of heartburn in you, never presume or disregard a serious symptom as just an ordinary case of indigestion and reflux.  If you believe it’s more than heartburn, then report it right away and have yourself treated.
